This standard unveils the intricacies of AC metal-enclosed switchgear and controlgear with rated voltages from 3.6 kV to 40.5 kV, encompassing technical requirements such as terminology definitions, operating conditions, ratings, design and construction, type tests, and routine tests.

This standard applies to factory-assembled, indoor or outdoor-installed, AC metal-enclosed switchgear and controlgear with rated voltages of 3.6 kV to 40.5 kV and a frequency of 50 Hz or less. These devices may contain fixed or withdrawable components within their enclosures, and may be filled with insulating and/or interrupting fluids (liquid or gas).

For metal-enclosed switchgear and controlgear with special applications, such as those used in environments with flammable gases, mines, or ships, additional technical requirements may be necessary. The components installed in the metal-enclosed switchgear and controlgear shall be designed and tested in accordance with their respective standards. Considering the installation of individual components within the complete switchgear and controlgear system, this standard provides supplementary requirements to the standards for individual components.

This standard does not exclude the use of other equipment within the same enclosure, and it is necessary to consider the impact of such equipment on the complete switchgear and controlgear system.

This standard also applies to metal-enclosed switchgear and controlgear with rated voltages above 40.5 kV, using air insulation or gas-filled compartments, with a design pressure not exceeding 0.3 MPa (relative pressure).
